Many of us remember when infant shoes used to be hard and stiff.  Today, we think such shoes are, well, archaic.  However, at the time the medical and development experts all agreed that a firm shoe with a broad base of under-foot support was best for a child.   After all, such a supportive platform will help the child get balance and stand up independently.

Today, the mantra is “barefoot is best” – and experts agree that little feet should be allowed to develop naturally without outside interference.  The best shoes are those that simulate the barefoot environment.  They should be soft, pliable and flexible. With all the changes in the children’s shoe design one thing remains the same:  no matter what style of shoes you choose for your baby, they need to fit properly.  Shoes are really not required until the child starts to walk around furniture.  Their flexing of their little toes provides balance and gain confidence in taking their first steps.   Questions?  Just email a note to pedorthics@lwshoes.com and one of Lamey-Wellehan’s certified pedorthists will answer it!
