We care for our health by eating right, exercising and getting enough sleep but don’t consider how our sex lives contribute to our overall health. Research has confirmed sexual expression, which also includes kissing and sensual touch, in a healthy, stable relationship can improve our physical and mental wellbeing. Sexual activity can be another way to stay connected to ourselves, our partners, get some wonderful exercise, lower our chance of sickness, lower our stress levels and even possibly help us live longer.
Some Health Benefits to Consider Next Time You Cuddle with Your Partner:
Boosts The Immune System: Sexual expression 1-2 times a week can boost your immune system by increasing Immunoglobulin A, which allows us to be more resilient to illnesses such as colds.
Provides Some Relief for Those Aches & Pains: Sexual arousal and orgasm can increase levels of endorphins and corticosteroids that raise pain thresholds, easing discomfort associated with arthritis, back pain, migraines and other painful conditions.
Heart Health: Studies have shown that sexual activity can help reduce heart attacks, lowers blood pressure and can improve the cardiovascular system. Sexual expression keeps your heart healthy!
Better Sleep Patterns: Sexual release can help you go to sleep and improve sleep patterns. An increase in oxytocin and endorphins may act as natural sleep aides, and we all know how important sleep is to our mood and overall health.
Pelvic Floor Health & Bladder Control: A strong pelvic floor is important for avoiding urinary incontinence. Sexual activity i.e., intercourse, is like a “workout” for your pelvic floor muscles which helps to oxygenate tissues and increase muscle strength. Coincidentally, the stronger your pelvic floor muscles, the greater the potential for stronger orgasms and enhanced sensation. Keep performing your pelvic floor exercises (Kegels) and add an extra lovemaking session to your weekly workouts.
Sexual Expression Has Emotional Benefits
Improves Your Mood: Physical activity and exercise is a proven mood booster. Exercise, such as sexual expression releases pleasure-inducing endorphins that can ward off depressive symptoms, anxiety and increases vibrancy.
Strengthens the bond with Your Partner: When sexual activity is consistent and involves mutual pleasure, it can increase bonding since the surge of oxytocin, also known as the “love hormone” stimulates feelings of affection, intimacy and closeness.
This list of benefits is far from complete and does not describe every healthful aspect of sexual expression, but will hopefully inspire some to have the healthiest and longest sex life possible.
