Welcome to AARP!
AARP Maine’s staff and dedicated team of statewide volunteers have worked tirelessly on behalf of Pine Tree State residents since we first opened our office on Congress Street in Portland in 2001. Our advocacy and outreach initiatives have resulted in financial relief and improved services for hundreds of thousands of older Mainers. At AARP, we are deeply committed to the notion that all Americans have the right to age with independence and with dignity. Read more in the Maine State Fact Sheet 2012.
Nationwide, AARP has almost 40 million members, making us the largest and most powerful lobbying force in America for issues affecting the 50+ population.
AARP is non-profit and non-partisan. You’ll see us at the state house and on Capitol Hill in our trade-mark red shirts, lobbying on behalf of Mainers on the issues we all care about. These issues include Social Security, Medicare, state programs and benefits, prescription drug savings and fraud prevention. During elections, you’ll receive useful information about each candidate for office, where they stand and where AARP stands on certain issues. Our goal is provide you with voter information that will help you make informed decisions at the polls.
Since 1958, AARP has been leading a revolution in the way people view and live life. With the invaluable help of hundreds of volunteers throughout the state, AARP Maine’s community service programs touch the lives of our citizens in many different ways. In 2011, 250 volunteers helped over 20,000 Mainers with returns and tax-related inquiries through AARP’s Tax-Aide program. This is a free service administered by AARP Foundation in cooperation with the internal revenue service. An impressive 14,386 returns were filed through the program in 2011, all for free. Thousands of Mainers also took AARP Driver Safety classes . They learned defensive driving techniques and are now saving on their car insurance premiums.
AARP’s founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, (see also Andrus, A Mission, A Legacy, and An Opportunity) coined the phrase “to serve, not to be served” as AARP’s mission statement. This is at the core of who we are and what we do. For example, in 2011, AARP chapters and volunteers worked with local residents and businesses to collect food for the state’s food pantries. Literally, thousands of pounds of food were donated as a result.
If you are interested in volunteering with AARP, we would love to hear from you! Much of AARP Maine’s success has been the result of a team of tremendously dedicated and well-organized grassroots volunteers and activists. With their help each year, AARP Maine generates timely phone calls and emails to legislators on issues of importance to our membership. Together, our voices have propelled AARP as a force to be reckoned with in Maine’s political arena. If you would like to join our team, contact us at me@aarp.org or call 1-866-554-5380.
With our history of advocacy, a vibrant lobbying base and community connections in Maine, AARP has established a strong reputation as an authentic voice on issues such as health care reform, prescription drug costs, the state budget, property taxes and Social Security that are pertinent to a trans-generational population. With your help, we can meet every challenge with energy and resolve.
