Maine Senior Guide has announced the speakers for the York Senior Expo on Wednesday, September 10, at the York Legion Hall, 9 Hannaford Drive, York. The free expo opens at 9 a.m. in the main hall and speakers begin at 9:30 in the adjacent speaker’s gallery. All talks are free, with first-come seating.

Beginning at 9:30, Cancer Care Center of York County’s Karen Pierce-Stewart will give tips for starting The Conversation, the talk you have with your adult children about your end-of-life wishes. She will share a guide that covers the decisions you and your family may face, so that you develop a shared understanding of what matters most to you and your loved ones.

York Senior Expo speaker Chris Orestis10:30 – Chris Orestis from Life Care Funding will talk about the very real costs of long term care. How can a life insurance policy be converted to pay for assisted living, home care, and other forms of long term care? Life Care Funding is a national long term care funding company that specializes in converting the death benefit of an in-force life insurance policy in to a long term care benefit plan.

York SeniorExpo speaker Dr. Peter Guay11:30 – Dr. Peter Guay of Maine Medical Center’s Joint Replacement Center, will talk about new knee replacement options and the latest remarkable trends in joint replacement in general. Dr. Guay, an orthopedic surgeon, has practiced for 25 years in Maine.

12:30 – Amanda Poulin and Lisa Garneau, RN, diabetes educators from Novo Nordisk, will hold at one hour Diabetes Academy to quickly review the basics of diabetes and diabetes management. From warning signs to treatments, they can answer questions and provide resource information.

York Senior Expo speaker Julie Ann Petersen1:30- Everyone experiences “the blues” now and then and seniors are no exception. Sometimes we face challenges and changes that leave us wondering how to deal with sad feelings and unexpected struggles in our lives. We need to know the difference between blues and depression, why it is ok to ask for help and how to go about getting it. Come learn strategies and tips for a healthier and happier you. Speaker Julie Ann Peterson, LCSW is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Outpatient Program Supervisor for Health Affiliates Maine.

2:30 – Falls are not a normal part of aging! Physical therapists from the Safe Strides Balance Program at Gentiva Home Healthcare will talk about Staying Upright as We Age. Learn how practice and education can prevent falls. Learn how to modify your home to maximize safety and get some of the tools necessary to remain independent.

Other York Senior Expo Happenings

In the Maine Expo Hall, BoomerTECH Adventures will be offering a free TechTable to answer all your questions about smart phones, tablets or other technology. Thomaston Auction Galleries will be providing antique appraisals ($5 per item) to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.
