Saturday, October 29, is the day to get rid of unused, unwanted and outdated pills, ointments and drops, either prescription or over the counter. You can even get rid of veterinary products at your community’s medication collection center.
Many communities are asking people not to stash extra drugs, which can cause a safety problem when kids or teens get into the medicine cabinet (or your house falls victim to a robbery). And flushed medications can cause serious environmental damage. Don’t flush or stash your unwanted meds, take them to the medication collection center most convenient to you.
You don’t need to live in a community to drop off unwanted medications, so if it’s easier, plan your med drop off for a site near where you normally do your Saturday shopping. In South Portland, drop spots include the Community Center on Nelson Road or the HUB CPPC trailer at 58 Westbrook St, from 10 am -noon.
In the Bath-Brunswick area, these locations will collect meds from 10 – 2 p.m.
- Bath Middle School, Old Brunswick Road
- Richmond Senior Center, Front Street
- McLellan Building, 85 Union St., Brunswick
- Phippsburg Fire Department, Maine Road
- Harpswell Town Office, Mountain Road
You can call your local police department for the nearest medication collection center hosting an October 29 event or check on the government site for drug disposal centers.
