November 15 started the open enrollment period for seniors eligible to participate in Medicare (November 15 – December 31). There are many different supplental care plans offered, and it’s probably a good idea to review your needs (based on how you used your Medicare plans during 2010) and see if your current plan is your best option.

Saturday’s Portland Press Herald ran an article featuring Southern Maine Agency on Aging, and the assistance they offer in choosing or changing supplemental insurance plans that help cover deductibles and prescription drugs.

People can sign up for Medicare three months before their 65th birthday (coverage starts for most people at age 65). Part A is hospitalization insurance and also covers in-patient rehab at nursing facilities.  Part B covers outpatient services, likes doctors appointments. Part C are the Medicare advantage plans, and Part D plans cover prescriptions.  The plans change every year, which adds to the confusion. There’s more assistance at other area agencies on aging in Maine, and also at the national Medicare site.
